Ms. Julissa's (Julie) lifelong dream was to become a dance teacher and open up a dance studio in Springfield, MA to give everyone a chance in her community to experience dance. Ms. Julissa was fortunate enough to be able to dance at a studio from the age of 2 to 12 years old studying hip-hop, salsa, bachata, merengue and plena. She then moved to another local studio from the ages of 12 to 23 years old and studied in the following genres: hip hop, jazz, lyrical, contemporary and ballet. Ms.Julissa competed at various regional and national dance competitions from The age of 12-23 years old. In 2012 Ms.Julissa began teaching dance (hip hop, jazz, lyrical)at the studio she was attending and her classes won numerous amounts of awards. Ms.Julissa went on to HCC and took a lyrical course there and then transferred to Bay Path University where she auditioned and was on the bay path dance company team for 4 years where they trained and competed at competitions each year. She also took classes there as well in jazz, tap and technique. Ms.Julissa was called back in to choreograph multiple routines in jazz, hip hop, lyrical and contemporary dance during and after graduating. Ms.Julissa went on to be a judge for Dance to Inspire dance Competition. In 2018 Ms.Julissa landed her dream job teaching dance at a Performing Arts public school. Ms. Julissa is now on her 6th year teaching hip-hop, jazz, lyrical, ballet, contemporary, tap and Spanish dances. She puts on two showcases each year for the community and is the director of the schools Dance Competition Team where students have to audition to get on the team, and the compete at dance competitions during the year. The dance team has won numerous genres, category, overall and judges awards. JLA was created to continue teaching her former, current and any new dancers that want to love dance.
Competitive level classes are offered to the more serious dancer. Students enter this program through invitation, audition or upon teacher recommendation and they are chosen by skill level, motivation and dedication. Being on the competition team is the equivalent to being on a select “sports” team, a significant commitment to dance and a great deal of extra time and effort is involved on the part of the student as well as the parent. If you are interested and able to fulfill all the required obligations, both parent and student must arrange a meeting with Ms. Acevedo
